Fish Stories

We are itching to get our lines in the water.

Please let us know if you hear any reliable rumors (oxymoron) of catches off of Montauk. There are unreliable rumors that they are catching blue marlin within sight of the lighthouse.

This is the kind of music we like to wake up to in the morning.

Stevie,

here are some bits and pieces of what i've read this week...

1. lots of life when I was there on sunday last week... whales, dolphins, birds, bait... We raised two marlin into the spread, had one on, lost it... tuna were frustrating and busting the surface sun afternoon but wouldn't take a plastic bait for anything... finished the day with 2 skipjacks and some mahi to show for the run....tuna bite is waaaayyyyyyy off....

2. We fished out there last Friday,no Tuna but picked on the Mahi most of the afternoon.

3. don't bother. Wait till after the moon or the next hurricane. It has been very very slow although the life is there. Bigeye or bust is the name of the game.

4. Left montauk pt 4am. Lines in at 6:30am bit east of Dip on 100f. Trolled SW, through tons of pilot whales, longline gear, and skippies. Fished the Lobster claws hard then trolled east towards the break between the middle grounds and tails and caught zero tuna. Small fleet of boats at the claw (after news of a decent bite) and most did nothing. We did hook and fight a 3-400lb blue for about 7min but broke it off. Picked up and ran to the tails after someone caught a fish or two, but only had more skippies.

5. I just saw a report from a friend who limited out (18 fish) on medium yft on the flats above the dip. Certainly not a typical report from the last week or so, but encouraging.

6. Just got back from an overnighter - slow slow slow

We did manage three yellows (two on the troll) and a wahoo wednesday - started trolling today at 4:30am - not one fish -

It is tough out there right now -

Chunk bite is just starting - we lost one fish at the boat and the other we put in the box - both on live squid - drifting

7. Offshore the tuna fishing is a little disappointing. Apparently there are still some bluefins over by the Fairway Buoy, but
not many and it is easier to not catch one than to be successful. Offshore what yellowfins there are are on the small side,
and no sign of any longfins at all. The most yellowfins are around the 400 line, but the better size fish, along with
bigeyes are south of the edge. There are a surprising amount of white marlin out there.

-end of reports-

well, that doesn't sound too encouraging, but it can't be long...
